Not Sure What Fruit and vegetables? Use G-BOMBS AS YOUR GUIDE
Recent nutritional studies show that the typical American diet consists of: (1) 50% or more of highly processed foods; (2) 30% meat; and (3) 20% or less of fruits and vegetables. We all know that we should be eating less highly processed, sugar-laden foods and more fruits and vegetables, but which fruits and vegetables are the most nutritious for us to eat?
I've found an easy way to remember this is to use Dr. Joel Fuhrman's (www.drfuhrman.com) advice: G-BOMBS. G-BOMBS is an acronym we can use to remind us which fruits and vegetables are the most nutritious:
G - Greens (salads and vegetables)
B - Beans
O - Onions
M - Mushrooms
B - Berries
S – Seeds
Greens. Leafy Greens are among the most nutrient dense of all foods. They are also rich in antioxidants. Green vegetables are rich in folate, calcium and contain small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.
Beans. Because beans are digested slowly, they have a stabilizing effect on blood sugar, which promotes satiety and helps prevent food cravings. Plus they contain soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol levels.
Onions. Onions, along with leeks, garlic, chives, shallots and scallions, make up the Allium family of vegetables, which are beneficial to the cardiovascular and immune systems, as well as having anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects.
Mushrooms. Regularly consuming mushrooms lowers risks of cancer.
Berries. Blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are true super foods. They are low in sugar and high in nutrients - hence are among the best foods you can eat.
Seeds. Seeds and nuts contain healthy fats and are rich in certain micronutrients, minerals and antioxidants.
This has helped me to quickly wade through various food choices. Hope it helps you too.
